Upper Chichester – The Wesley House Emergency Shelter facility in the City of Chester was facing possible closure due to roof issues.  The roof was in desperate need of replacement but the Wesley House lacked the funding to be able to complete the project.  Stefan Roots, City of Chester Mayor and Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. (CAADC) Board Member, advocated on behalf of the Wesley House Emergency Shelter with Adam Kaliner, co-Founder of Power Home Remodeling, who immediately stepped in to provide necessary funding to completely replace the 150-year-old roof.

Adam Kaliner began his career in home remodeling in 1992, and since then has grown the business to one of the largest home remodeling firms in the country.  Power Home Remodeling is based in the City of Chester and provides exterior services such as replacement windows, roofing, siding and doors.  While the company is active in local charitable initiatives, this roof project was supported solely through Kaliner’s personal philanthropy and commitment to strengthening the Chester community.

The Wesley House Emergency Shelter is a vital part of the Continuum of Care in Delaware County providing shelter to homeless families and single women.  The Wesley House Emergency Shelter is located at 701 Madison Street in Chester but serves families from all over Delaware County.  The Wesley House Emergency Shelter provides over 200 residents annually with safe and healthy shelter while also helping them with case management services leading to permanent housing.  The building is a former United Methodist Church that was built in 1874.  It has served as a shelter since 1986 and was taken over by Wesley House Community Corporation, Inc. and its parent company Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. (CAADC) in 1991.

A Building Inspection Report identified numerous issues with the building with the most crucial being the roof.  The report recommended work on the roof, eaves and associated drainage.  Recent government funding cuts and increased expenses have made it very difficult to just operate the shelter on a daily basis.  Being able to allocate funding for major repairs has become even more difficult.

Working closely with Community Action Agency of Delaware County, Inc. and the City of Chester, Mr. Kaliner helped formulate a plan to fund and complete the project, ensuring the shelter could continue operating safely. Through his personal support, funding was provided for the materials and labor necessary to repair the roof. The project was completed in November, just in time for winter.

Edward T. Coleman, CAADC Chief Executive Officer, stated “We are so grateful to Adam for his generosity and for stepping forward when the community needed it most. His commitment reflects the pride we hope to continue to see from local leaders for Chester and its residents.”

The Wesley House Emergency Shelter serves over 200 homeless residents per year and now will continue to be able to do so thanks to Power Home Remodeling.
